I learnt to despise my hair before many other things. Dry hair, brush in hand. And a painful routine attempted to straighten it up as much as possible. I yelled, sobbed, and hushed the hatred I had been told my hair deserved. That I deserved. I looked at my complex connection with my hair, including how it has shaped my life and self-perception. Through this project, I capture the mental and physical challenges of maintaining my hair, emphasizing the substantial time and work required, and the social belief that it needed to be controlled.
An apology to my hair, my father who brushed it daily, and myself.
